Sierra Leone pleads for ‘urgent support’ after deadly floods

Sierra Leone’s president appealed Tuesday for urgent help for the flood-hit capital of Freetown where more than 300 people have died, as rescue workers resumed the grim search for bodies. The Red Cross says it is struggling to excavate families buried deep in the mud that engulfed their homes, although several bodies were pulled up by machines in the devastated hilltop community of Regent on Tuesday, according to an AFP journalist at the scene. Addressing the media in Regent, one of the areas hit hardest by the flooding, President Ernest Bai Koroma fought back tears as he said the devastation “was overwhelming us”. “Entire communities have been wiped out,” Koroma said at the disaster site, where heavy rains streaming down the hill caused a landslide and engulfed homes three or four storeys high on Monday, many of them built illegally. “We need urgent support now.” The government has promised relief to the more than 3,000 people left homeless, opening an emergency response centre in Regent and four registration centres, while Interior Minister Paolo Conteh told Sierra Leone‘s state broadcaster that thousands of people remained missing. Israel and Britain said they were sending aid as quickly as possible to the stricken west African city of around one million people. Red Cross spokesman Patrick Massaquoi told AFP on Monday that the death toll was 312, but another Red Cross official, Abu Bakarr Tarrawallie, put the death toll at 245 in an email to AFP on Tuesday, while local media and officials all gave different tolls.

At the Regent site, residents told AFP that boulders and rocks had killed many as they rolled onto homes in the early hours of Monday, while a hill partially collapsed as floodwaters streamed down the slopes. Resident Abubakar Mansaray said it took just two minutes for the mudslide to suffocate families in the darkness. “Many unfinished buildings were at the hilltop, with those sprawling shacks all gone,” he told AFP. Abibatu Kamara, a mother of three who spent the night on her neighbours’ veranda, said the government response so far had been absent. “We have not received any food or blankets since the disaster occurred yesterday,” she told AFP. Survivors required immediate shelter, medical and food assistance, he added, and dozens of injured people were receiving treatment, the Red Cross’s Tarawallie told AFP. “There is a challenge of expertise in search and excavation and inadequate machines to excavate the submerged houses,” Tarawallie added. “Registration of affected people is ongoing now to ascertain total number of affected people later on.” Three days of torrential rain culminated on Monday in the Regent mudslide and massive flooding elsewhere in the city, one of the world’s wettest urban areas. Makeshift settlements that clung to the hills and shores were swept away or torn apart. The city’s drainage system was quickly overwhelmed, leaving stagnant water pooling in some areas while creating dangerous churning waterways down steep streets. Sierra Leone’s meteorological department issued no warning ahead of the torrential rains, which might have allowed for swifter evacuations from the disaster zones, AFP’s correspondent based in Freetown said. Foreign donors mobilise At the city’s military hospital, community health officer Wilberforce Mohammed Rogers said he had treated several children with multiple injuries, including a six-month-old baby. Many had lost their parents, Rogers said. An AFP journalist met victims sleeping in schools, community centres and out in the open, while others squeezed into homes of relatives. Foreign governments meanwhile began mobilising aid to Freetown. Israel’s foreign ministry said it would provide “assistance immediately and in every way possible” including clean water, medicines and blankets. British International Development Secretary Priti Patel said she was “deeply saddened” by the devastation and the loss of life. London was “already working with the government of Sierra Leone to coordinate the rescue efforts and are ready to provide further assistance to those in need”. Annual ordeal Freetown is hit each year by flooding during several months of rain, raising the risk of waterborne diseases such as cholera. Flooding in the capital in 2015 killed 10 people and left thousands homeless. Sierra Leone was one of the west African nations hit by an outbreak of the Ebola virus in 2014 that left more than 4,000 people dead in the country, and it has struggled to revive its economy since the crisis. The country ranked 179th out of 188 countries on the UNDP’s 2016 Human Development Index, a basket of data combining life expectancy, education and income and other factors.

Expert cautions women on smoking

Dr. Sharon Osaide, a Fertility Physician, said on Friday that women who started smoking early in life had 70 per cent chances of going into early menopause, as well as being infertile. Osaide, who is also a gynaecologist with Rose Du Rouge International Initiative and a Volunteer Consultant, said this in a Lecture at the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Orientation Camp in Lagos. She said that experience had shown that before now, most women, even at 52 do menstruate, but recently, it has become common that at 42, some women have stopped menstruating. “Smoking is another cause of infertility, as women that smokes have 70 per cent more chances of going into early menopause than women that do not smoke, especially women that started smoking at early puberty. “The longer a woman smokes at early puberty, the earlier she goes into menopause, which is why our mothers were still menstruating even at 52 years. “It is unfortunate some women at 42 years now go into menopause, though it is accepted because we are trying to adjust to the negativities of our society, instead of trying to make our society positive,’’ she said. The gynaecologist, who decried the high rate of women who experienced early menopause, advised women and corps members to refrain from smoking, so as to stem the high rate of infertility.

Osaide, who also highlighted the causes of infertility, said that untreated s3xually transmitted infections like Chlamydia and gonorrhoea have been said to affect one in five adults below the age of 22 in Nigeria. “That is staggering statistics, which means that as you are sitting down, the next four people sitting with you at one time or the other had either gonorrhoea or chlamydia. “The men are lucky when they have gonorrhoea, they could easily detect the problem, they have painful urination and they quickly go to a clinic and get treated. “Unfortunately for the women, a lot of times she is ace symptomatic, they do not even know that they are infected and it is there for years and it would develop into pelvic inflammatory disease. “It would lead to blocked fallopian tubes and may lead to infertility; the awareness programme is to say another reason to stay safe,’’ she said. The fertility expert said that obesity in male and female could lead to infertility, saying that an obese woman would have an irregular ovulation cycle. The expert also urged women to live healthy lifestyles by eating healthy food and engaging themselves in regular exercises.

Human rights abuses capable of undermining anti-terror war – Osinbajo

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo yesterday in Abuja said a series of allegations of fundamental rights abuses levelled against the military were capable of undermining the war against terrorism. Osinbajo made this comment while inaugurating a presidential investigative panel to examine the compliance of the Armed Forces with rights obligations and rules of engagement in the course of their assignment. He said inaugurating the panel became imperative in the face of many allegations levelled against the security agencies. “Indeed conventional human rights norms and conventional human rights observers are challenged by various nuances of asymmetric warfare. Nonetheless, there are series of allegations levelled against security forces by some local and international commentators….. the allegations are capable of undermining the good works and efforts of the men and women of the armed forces who have largely conducted themselves in a disciplined and professional manner,” he stated. He said the focus of the Buhari administration went beyond mere constitutional duties of protecting lives of the Nigerians citizens, adding that “respect for the lives of Nigerian citizens is not just a constitutional but also moral duty.

He added: “This is why it is incumbent upon us even as we maintain security especially in conflict situations, to interrogate alleged crimes and human rights abuses by all sides of these conflicts and insurgencies. “Today’s occasion is a continuation of the efforts of this administration geared towards attaining its goal. You may recall that in June, 2015, President Muhammadu Buhari directed the military to conduct an internal inquiry into allegations of rights abuses by its personnel.” The acting president also praised the Nigerian military, saying “it is also a well – known fact that the conduct of the country’s defence and security forces during insurgency in the North-east and militancy in the Niger Delta has in recent times attracted significant commendations. While charging members of the panel to discharge their duties diligently, impartially and with all sense of professionalism, the acting president urged them to also obtain information on conditions of service of the armed forces or any other factors that might have hindered the optimal performance. Troops storm UN building in search for arms in Maiduguri

Residents of Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, woke up to a disturbing news about soldiers invading a United Nations building. The soldiers, according to checks, were there in search of arms that were allegedly smuggled into the building by UN officials. The building invaded by the soldiers is popularly known as Red Roof. It was acquired by the UN which currently uses it as a hostel for its personnel. Red Roof was a property of a former governor of Borno State, late Mala Kachalla. Sources familiar with the incident said the soldiers arrived the Red Roof building in dozens at about 2 a.m., when they immediately secured all routes leading to the building. A personnel of UN who witnessed the incident said the soldiers said they acted base on an information made available to them by the SSS that they observed sinister movement going on within the expansive property that was fenced with high walls. The source, who pleaded anonymity because he was not permitted to speak to the media, said that the incident has since promoted the UN to suspend its humanitarian activities in the state. “The soldiers came at about 2 a.m. and surrounded the entire area around the UN building. And at about 3 a.m., they demanded that they wanted to go into the building to search for arms. “But the UN officials denied them access insisting that it was against their policy to allow armed soldiers invade their offices or buildings, especially at such odd hours of the night.” The soldiers, who were led by one colonel said they got information from the SSS that arms were being ferried into the buildings in large wooden containers. “We all know there was nothing like that because the containers that they were referring to were building materials which the UN is using to upgrade or build some structures sitting the acquired property. Presently the property serves as a place of accomodation for all the UN humanitarian workers in Maiduguri.

“When the soldiers wanted to force their way into the property, the security men had to lock the gate.” The source the soldiers and the UN security personnel argued for hours until about 7 a.m.when they finally allowed them in. “They searched the entire building and found nothing”, said the source. “The soldiers later withdrew from the area at about 7.45 a.m.” The search of the UN building happened a day after rumours went wild on social media that the Boko Haram leader, Abubakar Shekau, was being housed in the said building. A civil society leader in Borno State, Ahmed Shehu, was also at the scene of the incident at the Red Roof, said the civil society would investigate what led to such hostile disposition of soldiers towards the UN. “We got the information late last night that this place has been surrounded by soldiers, that is why we are here,” he said. “But whatever may be the soldiers reason, the invasion was not a good indicator for security. Already, people are agitated and are even bearing wrong perception about the humanitarian workers here. This could embolden the IDPs who see the humanitarian workers as their enemies. “It is even sad to hear that all UN flights coming into Maiduguri have been cancelled for today; though it has not been confirmed.” He said civil society networks will meet with the UN officials and probably come up with a statement later. Attempts to get across to the spokesperson of the military command and control centre in Borno, Onyema Okechukwu, wasn’t successful as his phone was switched off. One of the media officials of the UN in Maiduguri, Rabiu Musa, was contacted on phone to confirm the incident. But he said he could not immediately comment on the issue because he was out of town. He promised to revert as soon as he becomes acquianted with what actually happened.

How serious is North Korea’s nuclear threat?

US intelligence believes North Korea has now built a nuclear weapon small enough to fit onto a ballistic missile, making it a potent threat against neighbors and possibly the United States, the Washington Post reported Tuesday. The country’s nuclear advances have proceeded much more quickly than expected, but experts say North Korea still needs significant technological gains in order to become a full-fledged nuclear threat. – Where does the North Korean nuclear capability stand? – Pyongyang has conducted five nuclear bomb tests, with the last one, on September 9, 2016, roughly the size of the nuclear bomb the United States dropped on Nagasaki in 1945: 20-30 kilotons. That device, North Korea said, was going to be miniaturized and “standardized” for use on its ballistic missiles. This year it demonstrated an ability to launch an intercontinental ballistic missile in two tests. The most recent of them, on July 28, showed a missile with a theoretical range of 10,000 kilometers (6,200 miles), meaning it could hit much of the United States and Europe, including population centers like New York and Paris. – Is that enough to constitute an immediate threat? Besides reliable missiles with accurate targeting technology, Pyongyang needs to make sure its bombs would survive a 16,000 mile per hour (25,800 kilometer per hour) reentry from high in the atmosphere on an ICBM. It is possible their warheads are currently robust enough to survive the slower speeds of a shorter range missile that could strike Japan, but unlikely with an ICBM. According to Michael Elleman, of the International Institute for Strategic Studies, the re-entry vehicle on the July 28 test likely broke into pieces and disintegrated. Siegfried Hecker, a Stanford University nuclear expert, said it could be another five years before North Korea has an adequately robust reentry vehicle. “I don’t believe they have sufficient missile or nuclear test experience to field a nuclear warhead that is sufficiently small, light and robust to survive an ICBM delivery,” Hecker told AFP. – What other technical hurdles does NK face? – Hecker, who has visited North Korea several times to view its nuclear activities, said its weapons program is deeply constrained by its small supply of uranium and plutonium, especially plutonium, which is preferrable in an ICBM-mounted weapon. Combined, he said, its uranium and plutonium supplies are likely enough for 20-25 nuclear weapons. But according to the Washington Post report, the US Defense Intelligence Agency believes the country already has up to 60 nuclear weapons in its stockpile.

Amaechi disclosed this to news men after the monthly inspection of the ongoing construction of the Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway Line in Lagos on Tuesday. “As you know, every month we must meet to review the challenges that we have encountered from the project and the achievements the contractor have made. “So far; today we have assessed them, and we are maintaining that by December 2018, we will commence commercial services on this rail. “That is the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari who has insisted that we must ensure the whole country can be accessed by rail. “Yesterday, I inspected the works done from Itakpe to Warri; and from Abraka and Agbo.’’ The minister recalled that the contract for the project was awarded in 1987, but was later abandoned. He said that with the rail services across the country operational, the roads would last longer than before. According to him; the nation’s economy cannot progress without logistics, and logistics is transportation, He said that the nation’s roads would last longer if we transfer the transportation of our freights from road to railway. The minister said that the Federal Government had also approved sourcing for loan to construct the rail lines from Port Harcourt to Maiduguri. He said that this would cover and serve both the South East and the North East parts of the country. Amaechi appealed to Nigerians to be patients adding that the government would deliver the project at the appointed time for their benefit. The minister also noted that many job opportunities would be created in various communities as a result of the projects. NAN reports that Sen. Gbenga Ashafa; Chairman, Senate Committee on Land Transport, had said that the ongoing Lagos-Ibadan Standard Gauge Railway line would create additional 7,000 jobs for the youth. Ashafa said this during the Senate’s Committee on Land Transport as well as the Senate Committee on Local and Foreign Debts visit to the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC). “We are confident that the Lagos to Kano and Calabar to Lagos railway modernisation projects will, in no small way, reinvigorate the Nigerian economy through creation of about 7,000 jobs. “On our parts as senators holding the mandate of our constituents, we are totally committed to assisting the executive arm in the actualisation of every developmental project within our purview,” Ashafa said. The senator said that the visit was to assist the committee on Local and Foreign Debt asses the project implementation plan for the recently approved loan request by the Federal Government from the China Exim Bank.

Senate tells protesters to leave Buhari alone

The Senate on Tuesday lashed out at civil society organisations (CSOs) protesting the prolonged medical vacation of President Muhammadu Buhari abroad, asking the protesters to leave the president alone as he had not violated any law. It noted that Buhari, before his medical trip to the United Kingdom, fulfilled the constitutional requirement of informing the National Assembly of his vacation and transmitted power to the vice-president. Some CSOs had in the past two days besieged Abuja, demanding that the president either resumes duty immediately or resigns his position. The protest march, which was led by entertainment icon and activist, Mr. Charles Oputa (Charley Boy), however, took a new turn Tuesday as the police dispersed it, firing tear gas at the protesters that had gathered at their Unity Fountain, Abuja, rendezvous. The police explained later in the day that it disrupted the protest to forestall the breakdown of law and order. The Senate in a reaction to the protest by its Chairman of Media and Publicity Committee, Senator Sabi Abdullahi, cautioned the protesters against overheating the polity with what it called their unreasonable demands, saying their actions were creating unnecessary tension in the country. It said the protests could divert the attention of the federal government from its efforts at tackling the economic and security challenges facing the nation. “The president has broken no law and therefore we do not see any justification for this diversion and noise making,” the Senate said, adding: “The sponsors are merely seeking cheap publicity at the expense of the peace of Nigeria.” It denied the claim of the protesters that the president’s absence had created a vacuum and disrupted the workings of government. “We, in the National Assembly, are satisfied that there is no vacuum. The federal government is working. Acting President Yemi Osinbajo is providing the required leadership. So, there is no reason for the protests.” it said firmly. According to the upper legislative chamber, “All Nigerians now should focus on praying for the safe return of the president. We in the Senate are happy about the report by the governors and party leaders who recently visited President Buhari in London and we know he will soon return to continue to provide leadership to our people and the rest of Africa. “We, therefore, call on the protesters to stop all these demonstrations and let their sense of patriotism overshadow the zeal for activism by joining other Nigerians to pray for the president, the acting president and Nigeria as a country at this critical period.” But the protesters were swift in replying the Senate Tuesday, saying the position of the upper legislative chamber was an embarrassment to Nigerians, who were asking necessary questions on the whereabouts of their president. The protesters under the aegis of #OurMumuDonDo said they would not back down from their request calling on the president to either resume or resign, despite the harassment by the police. The leader of the group, Oputa, in a statement Tuesday said the Senate had failed in its constitutional responsibilities by not asking necessary questions on the health status of the president. “I am disappointed in this country. But let it be known that no amount of intimidation on us by security agencies will deter us from demanding explanations from the government,” he said, adding: “They must be accountable to Nigerians because they were elected into power by us, and it is on this basis that they will account for their actions. We are tired of the back and forth stories from the Presidency on Buhari’s whereabouts.” Oputa stated: “Also, to compound the mess Nigerians are in, it is disheartening for the Senate that ought to ask questions to be the very ones supporting such show of shame. Indeed, the feeling out here based on their position is that they are nothing but Buhari’s errand boys. I guess the Senate is desperate to please the president. Subsequently, policemen neutralised the protest by preventing the protesters from assembling at the Unity Fountain. They also stopped the group from proceeding further to the National Assembly gate and the State House. But the leader of Concerned Nigerians, Mr. Deji Adeyanju, accused the police of high-handedness and said no amount of police assault would deter the protesters from continuing on their call on the president to either resume or resign. He insisted that nobody in the country had the right to stop the citizens from gathering. Adeyanju said: “The president should resign if he is incapacitated. We are not interested in the lies the cabal is telling. “The police told us that they have an order from above, claiming that our protest is embarrassing the government, and we queried them to know who gave the order. “Buhari is a complete servant and Nigerians have the right to ask questions about the health of the person that is serving them. “The cabal in Aso Rock cannot continue to take the president in and out of the country at will, and continue to tell us lies.” The police, however, said it dispersed the protesters to prevent the breakdown of law and order. According to the FCT Police Command spokesperson, DSP Anjuguri Manzah, “In the early hours of today, 8th August, 2017 the Police intervened and prevented breakdown of law and order, and disturbance of public peace in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja by dispersing some miscreants, hoodlums and other criminal elements that have infiltrated the protest being carried out by a group of concerned Nigerians under the auspices of Our-Mumu-Don-do Movement at Unity Fountain, Maitama, Abuja. “It will be recalled that ‘Our-Mumu-Don-do Movement’ carried out their protest on Monday 7th August, 2017 at the same venue and were accorded necessary Police presence to safe guard public safety and public peace, and protect their rights to freedom of expression, rights to peaceful assembly and association, and right to freedom of movement as provided for in sections 39, 40, and 41 of the 1999 constitution as amended. “However, yesterday 8th August, 2017 the same group assembled at the same venue but allowed miscreants, hoodlums and other unruly individuals to infiltrate the protests, who started blocking the major roads adjoining the Unity fountain, obstructing traffic and preventing movements of other innocent citizens from going to their means of livelihood, and thereby exhibiting unruly behaviours and other violent acts very likely to cause the breakdown of law and order and disturbance of public peace.” Manzah explained that the police personnel intervened at the point the Concerned Nigerians group lost control of the crowd and prevented miscreants, hoodlums and other criminal elements from hijacking the protest to cause mayhem and chaos. He added: “It is pertinent to state here that the FCT Police Command is fully aware and recognises the constitutional rights of every citizen including ‘Our-Mumu-Don-Do Group’ to assemble and move freely in any part of the Federal Capital Territory, but the command will not allow any protest under any guise to turn violent and jeopardise the prevailing peace, law and order currently being enjoyed in the FCT. “The command wishes to assure all residents and visitors to the territory of adequate security and protection of lives and property of everyone including those who choose to express their constitutional rights of protest with decorum. “Consequently, members of the public, parents and guardians, religious/opinion leaders and other interest groups are advised to prevail on their children and wards, followers and adherents not to allow themselves to be used by any group to cause disturbance of public peace and breakdown of law and order.” Meanwhile, the Governor of Ekiti State, Mr. Ayodele Fayose, has said Buhari should be made the Minister for Foreign Affairs if he failed to resign. Speaking at a Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) forum in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital Tuesday, Fayose criticised the Presidency for shrouding Buhari’s health in secrecy. He said he was excluded from the delegation that visited the president in London because the organisers of the trip knew that he would “definitely reveal the truth”. Two weeks ago, Buhari hosted seven governors from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) and the PDP at the Abuja House in London. Fayose said if he had joined his counterparts on that trip, he would have observed Buhari closely and disclosed the outcome of his findings to Nigerians. He asked: “Why did they not take me to London? Why didn’t they take me there? He answered: “They obviously knew very well that I would listen to the man and know whether his voice is clear or not. Katsina spends N22bn on infrastructure in six months

Katsina State Government has disbursed over N22 billion as capital Expenditure in the first half of 2017, Governor Aminu Bello Masari, has disclosed. Masari, who spoke in an interactive session in Katsina with the governing council and management of Hassan Usman Katsina Polytechnic, said the government spent about N25 billion on capital projects last year out of the budgeted N75 billion while recurrent expenditure gulped about twice the capital expenditure. The governor also revealed that his administration would spend over three billion naira on primary education between this August and the end of the year to boost foundation level education towards sustainable improvement in the standard of education in the state. He noted that plans for local government poll in the state for the growth of democracy were underway and the State Independent Electoral Commission (SIEC) had spent N860 million on printing of election materials for the conduct of the poll. His administration, he said, has given local governments in the state in the past two years about N9.5 billion to enable them pay salaries following the cash crunch bedeviling the councils. Masari, who tasked the governing council and management of the institutions on strategic thinking especially on issues relating to security, manpower requirements and utilization of available resources, expressed appreciation for the polytechnic community’s support. In his remarks, the special adviser to the governor on higher education, Dr. Badamasi Charanchi, pointed out that the current administration expended N2.1 billion on salaries of the staff of the polytechnic in the last two years at an average of about N90 million per month. He assured the commitment of the Masari administration to uplift all frontiers of education as the education sector would remain the first priority of the government.

Obiano vows to unmask perpetrators of church killings

Willie Obiano, Governor of Anambra State, has vowed not to rest until the perpetrators of Sunday’s killings at St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Ozubulu, near Nnewi, which claimed at least eight lives and injured 18 persons are brought to justice. Obiano made the vow when he visited the scene of the killings in company of the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Garba Umar. The governor expressed grief over the death of the worshippers, describing the attack as “barbaric, sacrilegious and totally unacceptable”, while also debunking speculations of possible invasion. According to him, intelligence report linked the shooting to an existing feud existing between some members of Umuezekwe Ofufe Amakwa community of Ozubulu living abroad. “It is an isolated case and I urge worshippers in the Church and residents of the area to go about their normal activities.” Obiano assured the community that his administration was on top of the situation and later visited the injured persons receiving treatment at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Univerity Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), Nnewi. He promised that the state government would pay the hospital bills of the victims. He also said that 50 doctors had been mobilised to the hospital to assist in providing the best medical care to the injured persons. The governor also visited Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Cathedral, Nnewi, where he addressed a congregation of worshippers. He intimated the worshippers on the true picture of the incident, saying there was nothing to worry about. Earlier, the Parish Priest of St. Philip’s Catholic Church, Rev. Fr. Jude Onwuaso, said that the attack took place at about 6.30 a.m. during a Holy Mass celebration. According to the priest, an unidentified man came into the Church, shot at a man, Chief Akunwafor Ikegwuonwu, before shooting sporadically at other worshippers. An eyewitness, who simply identified herself as a choir member, said that the church was dark as there was no light. She said that the generating set suddenly developed fault; so, the mass proceeded with the congregation using candles. According to her, the gunman, after the shooting, immediately jumped into a waiting car with a driver. Meanwhile, the Police Commissioner confirmed eight people dead and 18 others injured in the attack. The attack has left the community in state of shock and mourning.

The lawmakers alleged that governor El’Rufai undemocratically compiled names of party officers of the state APC and single-handedly submitted the list to the National headquarters.

Prominent Nigerians attempted to answer the questions surrounding the on-going agitations for restructuring Nigeria at the 20th Wole Soyinka Lecture held in Benin City, Edo State on Friday, August 4, 2017. In attendance were Wole Soyinka, Africa’s first Nobel laureate in literature, Godwin Obaseki, the governor of Edo state who served as the chairperson of the event, Adams Oshiomhole, the former governor of Edo State, and Itse Sagay, the chairperson of President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption committee. The event, essentially, an All Progressives Congress, APC event, was titled, Nigerian State in the Aftermath of the Centenary: Prospect For its Indivisibility” witnessed Governor Obaseki saying that “Nigeria’s unity is non-negotiable” while maintaining that it was possible to make Nigeria great and prosperous again. Obaseki said that having the right leadership at all levels of government and the different aspects of life was the panacea to the recurring problem of the clamour for self-determination in the country. The Edo governor asked, “The question of whether Nigeria has come to stay is a non-issue. The real issue is what sort of country should we create for ourselves?” He explained that his administration was making concerted efforts to provide good leadership for Edo people and make positive impact in the lives of the youths to enable them take charge of their future. He commended the organisers of the lecture, noting that the topic was apt and timely, considering the agitations across the country. In his presentation, the guest lecturer and former governor of Edo State, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, said what should be paramount in the minds of Nigerians should be how to make the Nigeria Project a viable reality.

He explained that what needed to be addressed in the country was the socio-economic structure as well as the problem of bad leadership which has corruption at its core. “It is not in our interest that after 103 years of existence, we should be thinking of dividing. It is not a viable conversation that having lived this long together we should divide, rather we should think of ways of doing things differently for better results,” Oshiomhole said. He frowned at the wasteful spending of scarce resources by some government officials, noting that resources should be properly channeled to improve the standard of living of the masses. “The structural issue in the country needs to be addressed, the issue is really that of the very rich structure and the very poor structure. In addressing our challenges, we should restructure our attitude, character and value system and manage our resources well so that a very rich nation such as Nigeria will be able to take care of her poor people.” Also speaking, the chairperson PACAC, and a discussant at the lecture, Prof. Itse Sagay, said a return to true federalism would promote good governance in the country. Sagay urged that states be given autonomy as a situation where state governments have been reduced to mere civil servants, depending on monthly allocation was not ideal. “Why should the center have all the resources and states be impoverished? This has led to the inability of state governments to carry out their responsibilities.’’ In conclusion, Soyinka, in whose honour the event was held, called on all Nigerians to unite against the common enemy of corruption, stressing that in Nigeria, it is not actually one tribe that is against the other or one religion that threatens the other, rather it is the league of the corrupt that has caused impoverishment of the numerous ordinary people.
